Approximately fifty vehicles have been covered with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Cars, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a statement.

Law enforcement state they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored liquid.

The fluid had been drawn in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.

Officers then discovered many other marked automobiles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.

Police say initial examinations indicate the fluid was probably blood from a person.

"There is still no lead as to its origin; officials are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.

Local authorities stated they were attempting "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the public for information.

A high-ranking official said the incident left him without words and required to be solved rapidly.

"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he wrote on online, referring to the death of nine people by a assailant targeting residents of migrant background in February 2020.
